The composition is a study in material richness and asymmetry, with the wooden planes available in three finishes and outlined by a subtle framing detail.

In each version, one plane is deliberately thicker than the other, with the higher surface optionally finished in leather. This contrast highlights the piece’s tactile and visual appeal. While the single-leg support may suggest instability, balance is achieved through the principle of the Roman balance (stradera in Italian)—an ancient weighing scale with a beam of unequal arms and a counterweight that slides along the longer, graduated arm to maintain equilibrium.

Franco Albini (October 17, 1905 – November 1, 1977) was an Italian Neo-Rationalist architect and designer.  A native of Robbiate, near Milan, Albini obtained his degree in architecture at Politecnico di Milano University in 1929 and began his professional career working for Gio Ponti.
