Originally designed by Toshiyuki Kita in 1989 for Moroso, the Saruyama sofa is a revolutionary and iconic piece of contemporary design. Its sculptural, geomorphic form is composed of three distinct modules that join to create a large, circular island—each shape unique, inviting open and personal interpretations of how to sit, lounge, or gather.
Building on this lyrical concept, Kita later introduced Saruyama Islands—an "archipelago" of independent elements including small seats, a chaise longue, and low tables. These pieces can be used individually or in combination with the original Saruyama, expanding the system while preserving the organic aesthetic and multifunctional spirit of the original design.
While the original Saruyama is best suited for large, open environments, Saruyama Islands responds to more compact spatial needs without compromising the sculptural language of the collection.
