With its fluid, futuristic form, it marked a radical departure from tradition, reflecting the post-war desire for innovation and progress. Ponti embraced cutting-edge materials, using Vipla (a leather-like plastic) for the upholstery, curved plywood to connect the seat and backrest, and sleek metal feet with non-slip tips for easy assembly. Officially presented at the 1957 Milan Triennale, the chair was produced in limited quantities and became a prized collector’s piece.
A favorite of Ponti himself, the Round chair was frequently featured in his architectural projects. Now, more than 60 years later, it has been revived through Molteni&C’s Heritage Collection, in collaboration with the Gio Ponti Archives. Faithfully reissued with a multi-layered ash frame and black chrome or brushed brass feet, the Round D.154.5 is available in the full range of Molteni&C textiles and leathers, bringing a design masterpiece back to life.
