description
Sharing the ideals of Piet Mondrian, the chair reflects a pursuit of essential forms, the harmony of primary colours, and the rigorous use of right angles.
Gerrit Rietveld created the prototypes in 1918, initially using uniform colours to express the unity of structural components. He later refined the design by separating each element according to its function—black for the base, with vibrant colours for the seat and backrest. This evolution led to the chair’s iconic appearance and its eventual renaming from Slat Chair to the now-famous Red and Blue.
