'A Journey into Lina Bo Bardi's Creativity' – this is the name of the exhibition that will open during Designblok in the creative space for design and architecture – Konsepti Stage. Organised in collaboration with Italian furniture manufacturer Arper, the installation traces the creative journey of Brazilian-Italian modernist architect Lina Bo Bardi. Its centrepiece is a contemporary redesign of the iconic Bowl Chair which was created under Arper in a limited edition of 500 pieces.
Sculptural, elegant and timeless – that's the shortest way to describe the iconic Bardi's Bowl Chair. When designing it, the designer sought to keep the human body's proportions in mind. Then in 1951, she introduced two prototypes of a geometric, movable chair defined by a steel frame with four subtle legs and a hemispherical, bowl-shaped seat.
A re-edition of the iconic piece of furniture, created by Italian manufacturer Arper, will now be on display as part of the exhibition A Journey into Lina Bo Bardi's Creativity' at the Konsepti Stage, a creative space for design and architecture in Prague's Holešovice. Arper has teamed up with Instituto Bardi|Casa de Vidro to create a limited edition of 500 Bowl Chairs under their supervision.
The armchair retains its design and comfort, but is created deploying modern production methods. The seat, which was originally made of heavy hand-forged iron, is now made of plastic, making the structure both light and flexible. The collection includes a version in black leather and 17 others in coloured upholstery.
The exhibition will open to the public on 4 October 2023 concurrently with the 25th edition of Designblok – Prague design and fashion show. The event organisers have chosen the central theme of this year's edition to be 'JOURNEY'. This is also the exhibition's main motif, hence, the title: 'A Journey into Lina Bo Bardi's Creativity'.
'The theme of the exhibition parallels the theme of Designblok. I think that it successfully reveals the journey and principles of the strong, creative and hard-working architect Lina was. However, we are an interior design firm, so the exhibition is based on her seminal design piece – the Bowl Chair,' says David Řezníček, Konsepti's founder.
