description
A seminal piece in the emergence of the Modern style, this sideboard—designed in 1919—was originally featured in the model home created by J.P. Oud in Spargen, Rotterdam, and later in several interior design projects, including that of P.J. Elling, from whom the piece takes its name.
The original was tragically destroyed in a fire, but it was faithfully reconstructed under the designer's supervision in 1951 for an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Today, for the first time, Cassina brings this historic design into production at its carpentry workshop in Meda, in collaboration with the designer’s heirs.
The buffet’s composition is defined by a structural core that forms a geometric grid onto which drawers, shelves, and storage elements are suspended. Its design is influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright and the Anglo-Japanese style of E.W. Godwin, particularly in the interplay of pronounced horizontal planes and slender vertical supports. The continuous supporting grid is animated by contrasting slats that project outward, emphasising a dynamic tension and structural rhythm that captures the spirit of early 20th-century abstraction.
