“This was a new kind of chair, made entirely of leather—much imitated since,” says Mario Bellini, who created Cab in the 1970s. Today, it stands as an iconic piece in Cassina’s I Contemporanei collection.
The upholstery is crafted from sixteen pieces of saddle leather, each individually die-cut and subjected to fourteen meticulous hand-executed processes. Only after their outer edges are precisely trimmed for a flawless fit are the pieces sewn together to form the chair’s distinctive, sculptural shell.
Once assembled, the cover is attached to the chair’s steel skeleton and held in place by means of a zipper fastening, as in a bespoke tailored garment. Cab is available in a wide variety of colours.
