In 1951, Isamu Noguchi began designing the Akari Light Sculptures—delicate, luminous works inspired by traditional Japanese lanterns. The name akari, meaning both "light" and "lightness" in Japanese, reflects their ethereal quality. During a visit to Gifu, known for its paper lanterns, Noguchi sketched the first designs. Over the years, he created more than 100 models, including table, floor, and ceiling lamps ranging from 24 to 290 cm in height.
‘The harshness of electricity is thus transformed through the magic of paper back to the light of our origin – the sun.’ (Noguchi)
