A standout in Cassina’s catalogue since 1957, the 699 Superleggera is the result of a perfect synthesis between the visionary design of architect Gio Ponti and Cassina’s unparalleled manufacturing expertise.
The Superleggera showcases the technical mastery of the MedaMade artisans. Ponti’s bold challenge—to create an ultra-light chair—was met with brilliance: the legs feature a cross-section of just eighteen millimetres, and the entire chair weighs only 1,700 grams.
Crafted from ashwood for its lightness and elasticity, the frame is paired with a beech seat surround for added strength and durability. Each wooden component is machine-shaped and hand-finished, with glue applied by brush and excess wiped away by hand. The seat is expertly hand-woven, bringing together artisanal skill and industrial precision in what Ponti himself called a “prime object,” deeply rooted in the chair-making tradition of Chiavari, in Liguria.
