description
Inspiration strikes on Mount Takasaki in Ōita Prefecture, where the agile movements of Japanese macaques spark a vision: to liberate the innate playfulness and primal instinct we all carry within. Saruyama is not just a sofa—it's a topography of interaction, a sculptural form inviting users to sit, recline, or climb in spontaneous, intuitive ways.
Composed of three separate yet complementary pieces, Saruyama forms a single, unified circular island when joined together. Its shapes are organic and fluid—a morphological expression of beauty, impermanence, and the Japanese appreciation of transience. Like a shifting landscape, it accommodates multiple postures and encourages sociability in unique, open-ended ways.
Each element is crafted with injected flame-retardant polyurethane foam over an internal steel frame, set on a plywood base. The covers are non-removable, reinforcing the seamless, sculptural integrity of the design.
