Kolíne, Kolíne...!

18.1. 2018

Vyneslo mu to celosvětové uznání a titul Mistr židlí

Champagne Louis Roederer

5.6. 2017

Chytí a nepustí.

Starck Paris

1.3. 2017

Philippe Starck has become the latest designer to venture into the fragrance industry, adding three eau de toilettes to his extensive catalogue of products. The French designer will be releasing the fragrances – named Peau de Soie, Peau de Pierre and Peau d'Ailleurs – under his new perfume label, Starck Paris. Starck based each of the scents on childhood memories of his mother's perfume shop, and how it inspired his creativity. Starck worked alongside his wife and three master perfumers to create the scents, which he claims contain molecules that have never been used before. Starck was less focused on the packaging – his only request being that it was minimal and able to hold the fragrance. "The object is not what is important," he said.

Remembering Jens Risom

12.12. 2016

1916-2016. The world has lost a great creative mind and a wonderful man. One could say it was fate that brought Hans Knoll and Jens Risom together. Born on the same day, May 8th, two years apart, the two would meet shortly after emigrating to the United States from Germany and Denmark in 1937 and 1938, respectively. Hans Knoll was just months into a brand-new business venture, a furniture company then-called Hans G. Knoll Associates. In spite of grand ambitions, Knoll’s product inventory was lackluster, made up of a few pieces imported from Sweden, which floundered in the American market, and some unexceptional designs from Michigan. Knowing that the war would disrupt his supply lines in Europe, Hans Knoll was searching for someone to develop an original line of in-house furniture to replace the nondescript designs he was working with at the time.

DR: What do you think, is there still any future for companies like ours – more or less multi-brand, focused on a good, high level of design and service? Can we survive for another 20 years? RF: I really don’t know. I mean, I don’t have much insight into that issue, because I myself have no idea how furniture will be sold in the future. I can imagine that the service aspect will be the most important one. I see this when I go to a Vitra Shop where I have employees. When I go to the local dealer, I interact ideally with the boss or the owner. It’s also an owner who comes and brings me something on a Saturday, or says: “Can I come by to measure your...

Konstantin Grcic

15.12. 2015

As a child, Konstantin Grcic loved building things. After high school, he began working for an antique furniture restorer, "because I wanted to learn how to make things properly," he recalls. That led to an apprenticeship with a cabinetmaker, where he discovered something he liked even better than building: designing. He then went to the Royal College of Art in London, where he found his true passion: designing furniture. His work is known for its logical thought process, honesty of materials and respect for production methods, and his client list reads like a who's who in both furniture and household goods: Authentics, Flos, Iittala, Krups, Lamy, Magis, Moroso, Muji, Plank and Vitra, among others. His partnership with Magis led to one of the most interesting and...

A bird’s story

1.12. 2015

Since the early 1950s, photographs of the Eames House show a small black bird sitting on the living room floor. The wooden bird is still there to greet visitors to the landmark house in Pacific Palisades, California. The bird also appears in commercial photos taken by Charles Eames, one of which quickly reached iconic status: the bird’s graphic silhouette is juxtaposed against a geometric grid of several Eames Wire Chairs. The Eames House Bird is so familiar to us, but what is its story? Charles and Ray Eames did not design the bird sculpture, but kept it as part of their personal collection of objects. The bird originally served as a crow decoy and was most likely carved during the early 1900s in Henry, Illinois, where artisan Charles Perdew had a business making and selling...

Harry Bertoia 1915-1978

10.3. 2015

Italian artist and furniture designer, Harry Bertoia, was thirty-seven years old when he designed the patented Diamond chair for Knoll in 1952. An unusually beautiful piece of furniture, it was strong yet delicate in appearance, and an immediate commercial success in spite of being made almost entirely by hand. With the Diamond chair, Bertoia created an icon of modern design and introduced a new material, industrial wire mesh to the world of furniture design. Bertoia's career began in the 1930.s as a student at the Cranbrook Academy of Art where he re-established the metal-working studio and, as head of that department, taught from 1939 until 1943 when it was closed due to wartime restrictions on materials. During the war, Bertoia moved to Venice, California, and worked with...

70th Anniversary of the Emeco 1006 Navy Chair

6.10. 2014

In 1944, Wilton Carlyle Dinges founded the Electrical Machine and Equipment Company (Emeco) in Hanover Pennsylvania utilizing the skills of local craftsman. During WWII the U.S government gave him a big assignment, make chairs that could withstand water, salt air and sailors. Make chairs lightweight and make them strong, build them for a lifetime. Aluminum was the obvious choice, engineered for practical purposes, designed by real people. Emeco named the chair with a number: 1006, some people call it the Navy chair. We still call it the Ten-o-six. Forming, welding, grinding, heat-treating, finishing, anodizing- just a few of the 77 steps it takes to build an Emeco chair. No one else makes chairs this way. No one can. It takes a human eye to know when the process is done right, and it...

Konsepti´s new visual

1.4. 2014

Such things usually come many years after the establishment of a company. As regards big corporations, it may take as long as 20 years. As regards tiny companies, such as ours - moreover run by management obsessed with making changes - this is the part of every five-year plan. It has been the 5th change during the 19 years of Konsepti´s existence.  We are talking here about the company´s new visual, i.e. the graphic and visual image of the company. In the past, we cooperated with many great authors - Graham Rust (Rust), Tomáš Machek (sdie2), Martina Černá (Imagery), David Březina (ExLovers) and we greatly respect all of them.  If you want to make a change, you need courage, which tends to run short with increasing experience. However, that daily effort to find and convince the customers to purchase our "beautiful, functional and cheap" but genuinely inessential furniture is largely demanding and exhausting. Only for strong personalities. Therefore we also welcome each good opportunity to relax a little and take a look at our work from quite another angle. Last time we had this chance was when we created the new company identity and company visual. We have already mentioned it last time. The most entertaining part was definitely the shooting. Matchbox

12.2. 2013

I am always amazed when I come across some kind of human enterprise or a piece of work which manages to capture the zeitgeist, the present feelings and needs of people and as a result often retains its quality and respect from others for decades to come. And I’m all the more fascinated when it doesn’t refer to purely practical or pointless creations, yet still manages to achieve huge success and acknowledgement. Upon entering the UMPRUM museum, I asked myself the question whether it was really me going to a Matchbox museum with my son or the other way around. It turned out not to be all that important. We both came away feeling we’d experienced something special although it has to be said, it was somewhat greater for me. Among the coloured boxes and cars of all...

The last master of modernism

14.1. 2013

Only 10 days before his incredible 105th birthday, Oscar Niemeyer – the last of the great representatives of architectural modernism – died on 5th December in Rio de Janeiro. Niemeyer, who has been professionally active since completing his studies in 1934, was undoubtedly one of the world's most influential architects ever. Hardly anybody was able to put so much of a bold lightness into poured concrete as he was. The more than 600 realized buildings and urban projects include, for example, the UN headquarters in New York from 1947 (in collaboration with Le Corbusier), the Edificio Copan high-rise residential building in Sao Paulo from 1951, university buildings in Brazil, Israel, Algeria and Cuba, theNiteroi Contemporary Art Museum (2001), the Rivello...

Prague from a new perspective

2.7. 2012

I always think I know it already, that I’ve exhausted all the points of view. That it can’t surprise me anymore… And yet it does.  Prague Castle has opened the Southern Gardens. They cover a relatively narrow strip along the south wing of the Castle, one opening seamlessly onto the other, and are called Rajská, Na Valech and Hartigovská. They can be accessed from the east or west end or directly from the Plečnik Stairs leading from the St. Vitus Cathedral.    Every step offers a different experience, a different view – of the Castle, of Prague. The shade of tall trees, ivy and other creepers, adequately decorative plants, groomed paths, tasteful fittings – everything is just right, moderated and in sensitive harmony with the...

Dad and the Tree

21.6. 2012

In early June, the second year of the Art Design Festival "Fragile Mikulov" took place in the charming town of Mikulov. This daring project combines the stunning location (“Moravian Tuscany”), the venerable chateau, fine wine, friendly people and good weather with exhibitions and installations of (not only) contemporary design and applied arts. The Czech authors were joined by foreign artists and galleries. This year, the organizers deserve great praise for the thematic and solo exhibitions. I really enjoyed the products of glass artist Vratislav Šotola, which his daughter Anna presented in pleasantly informal settings under the title “Dad”. The strongest story was associated with a solid wooden table called “Tree”, which was...

An experience at wheelwright Lasík´s

28.5. 2012

If you have a day off or a free late afternoon and are in the mood for a special experience, take out your wheels, preferably a bicycle, and head downstream the Vltava River. Whether you are starting off from Stromovka or from the other bank along the Troja channel, keep on going along the river and past the zoo towards Klecany. One stretch of the road is still very rocky, but most of it is tarmac with a couple of places along the road for refreshments. When you get to Klecany, make a romantic crossing with the bearded ferryman in the striped t-shirt to Roztoky on the other side. From here, continue on through the stunning Tiché údolí (Quiet Valley) along the creek to Únětice. The trip takes 1 – 1 and ½ hours. As soon as you pass the first...

Inspiration in the traditional craft

10.5. 2012

A family of seating furniture, where the large stool can also be used as a table. Threads are rolled around a tubing that is attached to a metal frame, this process originates from a Vietnamese technique where paper thread is rolled around seagrass to make small bowls. Together they form a group of individuals, playing well together or on their own. The idea ...of Superheroes came following a journey to Vietnam where Glimpt visited different artisans, studying their techniques and finding inspiring materials and colours. After a while they came into contact with skilled seagrass and plastic weavers in Ho Chi Minh City. Glimpt also wanted to incorporate other influences in their work so they contacted the Swedish illustrator Malin Koort, who helped develop the patterns for the series....

Joe Colombo: The story of one armchair

3.4. 2012

The Italian Futurist, an elegant man with a pipe, the designer Joe Colombo (1930—1971) is most frequently associated with his progressive attitude towards design, having spent much time in the 1960s searching for new starting points, material experiments, functional and production innovations yet, above all, a completely new way of living which was supposed to go hand-in-hand with the interior design of back then, as is illustrated for instance in his experimental proposals for apartments and residential units. His famous armchair with the prosaic labelling 4801 which the author designed in 1965 for the Kartell brand may well be a futuristic experimentally conceived solitaire, but the corpus produced by Colombo is surprisingly made entirely out of wood. During the time of its...

Leon Ransmeier, Design for Life

6.3. 2012

Amongthe names of many famous designersin the last collection of British brand Established & Sons, one could also spota few less known ones. Leo Ransmeier, who showcased his very clever and compact rotating “Revolver” barstool for the British manufacturer, was one of them. This barstool embodies Ransmeier’s view of the utility value of common everyday items, which this New York creator loves to design. Despite his previous cooperation with the legendary Dutch brand Droog, among others, Ransmeier’s work generally displays a clean minimalistic style with a little twist or ingenious functional enhancement that make his work more than mere blunt minimalism. The same principle was used in the author’s early design in 2006,in cooperation with Gwendolyn Floyd...

Shiro Kuramata, materials sing

9.1. 2012

The Cappellini brand recently opened up its shop in Milano after undergoing refurbishment. It was covered entirely in yellow proudly representing within it the unique creation of the Japanese post-modern virtuoso and classic of twentieth century design, Shiro Kuramata (1934—1991). And he is truly deserving of this right now. Last year marked twenty years from his death and these days his dreamy minimalist-playful creations are proving to be a great draw at world auction halls. And it is not by chance that this versatile creator is being presented right now in the Cappellini Showroom. To this day, the Italian brand manufactures several of his unique furniture solitaires. Taken from another angle, it can also be said that the work of this most famous Japanese designer is very...

Faye Toogood: Assemblage 3

24.10. 2011

At the end of September, one of the most important exhibitions of world design was held. The London Design Festival is increasingly perceived as the second most fundamental event of the year, right after April’s Milan trade fair. It is certainly true that the London Design Festival has become a particularly important event in the field of experimental and limited design rather than traditional series-produced furniture. This was also confirmed by the excellent exhibition in the gallery of the auction hall of Phillips de Pury & Company, located just behind the corner of the famous and fashionable Bond Street. The young designer and stylist Faye Toogood, who decided to design furniture a year ago, introduced only her third furniture and lighting collection here. After her...

Design weekend – an amazing weekend

13.10. 2011

Some people have probably thought this after the last weekend. But not only beautiful and still warm weather was the reason for this statement for those, who visited Pisztoryho Palace on Štefánkova street from the evening of 28th September to the evening of 2nd October, 2011. The place of the former Museum of Lenin, which had been closed for long years, was filled with a huge amount of energy, people and great things which brought this part of the Old Town to life. More than 50 exhibiting designers on 1,000 square meters of the Starter Zone area, curatorial expositions, a pleasant courtyard, a good music, room for children, café, accessory programs (PechaKucha night, lectures, discussions, handing over awards... ). All of these have made the abandoned but still...

Milano master

30.8. 2011

We can detect a single, compact trend from the new collections of certain Italian furniture “super brands” over the past two years. It is a new wave of re-editions of classic modernist designs created primarily in the fifties and sixties. Besides Alias, which this year presented the Manzú armchair by Pio Manzú, the automobile designer (we will definitely mention him again next time) and Zanotta, the main protagonist is Cassina, which presents modernist design in a new light every year. Last time it was the exceptional work by the eminent designer Franco Albini (1905 - 1977). This designer and architect, who was based and worked in Milan, is one of the most important figures of Italian post-war avant-garde design. His work, which he developed already starting in the...

Summer design break

25.7. 2011

I really don’t know. Maybe it is old age and senility at the door; maybe I’m a bigger romantic than I thought. Or maybe it’s just the increasing pleasure found in good food and other basic indulgences that life offers a mature man. Whatever the case, I have enjoyed it all to the fullest. What? Apricot dumplings sprinkled with quark cheese and breadcrumbs, of course. No – this isn’t going to be about design. Or is it? I got the tip from Maxim Velčovský when we met at the first year of the Křehký Mikulov (Fragile Mikulov) Artedesign Festival in June. I missed it that time, as Mikulov itself bewitched me. But I remembered after returning from my family holiday in Croatia with Orson Welles (that story some other time...). The majority of the miserable drive from...

A thousand square meters in which the spanich designer gives free rein to her creativity and flair. Every year her spectacularly original, innovative space designs continue to amaze the public. Salone del Mobile 2011

16.5. 2011

Last week, more than 800 000 people travelled to Milan for a day or two, the rebellious city of Northern Italy. The prices of hotels basically tripled, the underground system underwent extreme stress tests and the pedestrian bridge connecting Porto Genova square with via Tortona street became the busiest in the world without a doubt. And the reason for all of this was surprisingly neither football (calcio), nor fashion (moda), and not even the famous Italian cuisine (cucina italiana).
